Versions, plugins, and mods

Key questions 1
Paper, Fabric, Forge, Vanilla: which one should I pick?
Paper or Purpur for plugins, Fabric, Forge or NeoForge for mods, Vanilla for the official game with nothing added.
To add plugins (server-side extensions, nothing to install on the player's side): pick Paper or Purpur.
To add mods (change the game, must be installed on the player's side too): pick Fabric, Forge or NeoForge depending on what your mods require.
To stay as close as possible to the official game, with nothing added: Vanilla.
Plugins and mods don't mix: a Paper server doesn't install mods, a Fabric server doesn't install plugins.
Tutorials 5
Changing the server version
Version tab, pick the edition then the version, and leave Formater le serveur (format the server) unchecked to keep your world.
Back up first (see backups).
Version tab: pick the Édition (edition), then the Version.
Leave Formater le serveur unchecked to keep the world and files. Checking this box wipes everything, with no way back.
Click Installer la version (install version), then start the server.
Going up a version (1.20 to 1.21, for example) rarely causes issues. Going down often damages the world: restore a backup made in the older version instead.
Installing a modpack
Modpacks tab, search for the pack, pick the version, then Installer le modpack.
Modpacks tab: search for the pack and click its card.
Pick the Version matching what your players will install on their side.
Check Formater le serveur (format the server) for a clean install (wipes the current files: back up first if needed).
Click Installer le modpack (install the modpack). The first start can take several minutes.
If the install is stuck for a long time, see modpack stuck on install.
My modpack isn't in the list
Download the modpack's "Server Pack" (not the client pack), install the right loader, then send the mods and config folders.
On CurseForge or Modrinth, download the Server Pack for the modpack (not the client pack, which is meant for the player's launcher).
Version tab: install the exact loader and version required (Forge, NeoForge or Fabric).
Send the contents of the server pack, the
modsandconfigfolders, through the Fichiers (Files) tab or over SFTP, replacing the existing folders.Start the server and check the console: it names the missing or extra mod if there's a problem.
Installing a plugin
Plugins tab, Installer un plugin card (install a plugin), search on SpigotMC or Modrinth.
Before you start
A Paper, Spigot or Purpur server, already started at least once.
Check the server's edition in the Version tab (Paper, Spigot or Purpur).
Plugins tab: Installer un plugin card, choose the source (SpigotMC or Modrinth), search, then install.
Restart. The plugin appears under Plugins installés (installed plugins) and creates its config folder in
plugins/.For a plugin not in the catalog: download its
.jarand drop it into thepluginsfolder via the Fichiers (Files) tab, then restart.
On a Fabric, Forge or NeoForge server, the Plugins tab refuses the install ("Les plugins demandent un serveur Paper, Spigot ou Purpur"): for mods, see add mods manually.
Adding mods manually
Install Fabric, Forge or NeoForge in the right version, then drop the .jar files into the mods folder.
Version tab: install Fabric, Forge or NeoForge in the Minecraft version your mods require.
Start the server once to create the
modsfolder, then stop it.Drop the
.jarfiles intomodsvia the Fichiers (Files) tab or over SFTP. On Fabric, also add Fabric API if your mods need it.Or, instead of step 3: open Mode Expert (Expert Mode), then its mod manager: search for the mod by name and install it for your server version.
Restart.
Common errors
- Never upload client-only mods (shaders, minimaps, menus): built for the player's game, not the server, they often crash the startup. See the server crashes because of a mod.
